Why should you visit Realejo?

Realejo
The Realejo, also known as Realejo San-Matías, is an important touristic neighbourhood of Granada situated at the foot of the Alhambra.

In the 8th century, Muslims arrived to Granada and called this important Jewish quarter Garnata al-Yahud (Granada of the Jews). During the time of the Arab reign all of them lived together, but after the Christian conquest by Catholic Monarchs, Jewish people were expelled, the Jewish quarter was destroyed and was renamed the Realejo.

Walking through this maze means to traverse a network of paved narrow streets that forms a maze, in which you can appreciate the traditional cármenes, that is to say, isolated houses surrounded by a high wall and that have a small garden. In spite of its pronounced slopes, the walk will be really enjoyable, since the cultural heritage, which includes monuments and interesting buildings, can be mixed with a ludic area in which are located a large number of bars, where you can taste the tapas of Granada and enjoy its essence.

One of the most important monuments that must be visited is the Campo del Príncipe, a square built on an ancient Muslim cemetery. It must be emphasized a tradition that has been going on since the 18th century: every Good Friday the citizens gather in this square in order to pray to the Cristo de los Favores for three favours, surrounded by a profound silence. Close to this square is located the Iglesia Parroquial de San Cecilio, built on an ancient mosque and dedicated to the patron saint of Granada.

The Carmen de los Mártires, Casa de los Girones, Casa de los Tiros, Iglesia Imperial de San Matías or the convento de Santa Cruz la Real are other emblematic constructions.

For these reasons, the Realejo is an area that allows us not only to discover the magic of the narrow streets while contemplating the traditional cármenes, but also to enjoy the attractive monuments, the charming people of Granada and the traditional tapas, a deep-rooted habit among the inhabitants.
